Brief History
The 179th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron in Duluth flew RF-4Cs for nine years (from 1975 through 1983) using optical cameras and side-looking radar to provide up-to-date battle information. The 179th used these aircraft to fly the pre-strike reconnaissance missions over Grenada.
The 179th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, Duluth, converted from an air defense mission to tactical reconnaissance in October 1975 and was equipped with the RF-4C. Converting back to air defense in 1984, they flew the sleek gray F-4D. They converted to F-16s in July 1990.
